American Legion Programs

The American Legion is dedicated to the service of our nation and the communities we live.  In addition to programs that support fellow veterans, we have a variety of community programs aimed at enforcing our commitment to Americanism, Youth and Teens, Community Support, and Advocacy.   Here are just some of the programs and services we provide at Post 1288:

Manteno Bingo

Veteran Honor Guard

From time to time our Post will be called upon to provide the Honor Guard Detail for a Veteran who has passed away.  We are honored to provide this solemn service to our fallen brother and sister.  Members of Post 1288 partner with members of Bolingbrook VFW Post 5917 to form the Bolingbrook Veteran Honor Guard.  Fellow veterans are welcome to join the honor guard.

Should you have a need for a Veteran Honor Guard Detail, pelase contact the Post.

Gifts To The Yanks Who Gave

The GIFTS TO THE YANKS WHO GAVE program was instituted in 1944 to remember our hospitalized War Veterans.  Post 1288 continues to participate in this worthy program by distributing gifts annually to our veteran patients in local area hospitals or extended care facilities.  The program has had the continuous support and cooperation of Post 1288, Auxiliary Unit 1288, the S.A.L. Squadron 1288.  Receiving private contributions from individuals, businesses and other veteran organizations is critical to make this program possible.  To learn more about the program, please contact the Post.

Poppy Days

Each year, Post 1288 participates in Poppy Days.  Veterans from our Post will be on local street corners or local business distributing poppys.  The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. Wear or display a poppy to honor those who have worn our nation's uniform.
All donations received will be used by The American Legion for programs that support veterans, the military community and their families.  For more information, please contact the Post.

Veteran's in the Classroom

Each school year members of Bolingbrook Post 1288 and VFW Post 5917 travel to area schools to talk to students about their experience as veterans.  The program has become so popular that we are honored to continue to be asked to come out and share our stories.  If you are a member of either Post and would be interested in participating, please contact us for details on the next Veteran's in the Classroom program.
